British indie singer/songwriter Declan McKenna first emerged in 2014 with the shimmering, politically charged single “Brazil.” The teenaged Hertfordshire native only had a handful of self-released tracks to his name, having uploaded them to his Bandcamp page. With an attitude recalling the Libertines and Jamie T., McKenna blended bright indie pop with textural lo-fi. As “Brazil” gained traction throughout 2015, McKenna’s star began to rise, and that summer he took home the Glastonbury Festival’s coveted Emerging Talent prize. Austin, Texas’ MISSIO is an electronic-duo known for their dark, emotive pop. Formed in 2014, MISSIO features singer/songwriter Matthew Brue and producer/instrumentalist David Butler. Initially, the project began as an outlet for Brue’s solo material. However, after he invited Butler to collaborate on a few songs, they decided to move forward together. Recording in Butler’s converted garage/home studio, they began sculpting their brooding, anthemic sound; releasing such tracks as “I Don’t Even Care About You,” “I Run to You,” and “Can I Exist?” By the end of 2015, they had made their debut at SXSW and garnered support slots alongside acts like SAFIA, K. Flay, and others. In 2017, they delivered the single “Middle Fingers” and signed a recording contract with RCA Records.
Violinist and vocalist, Sudan Archives writes, plays, and produces her own music. Drawing inspiration from Sudanese fiddlers, she is self-taught on the violin, and her unique songs also fold in elements of R&B, and experimental electronic music.
Sudan Archives grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she “messed around with instruments in the house” and took up violin in the fourth grade, eventually teaching herself how to play the instrument by ear. When she discovered the violin playing style of Northeast Africa, her eyes opened to the possibilities of the instrument. “The way they played it was different from classical music. I resonated with the style, and I was like, ‘Maybe I can use this style with electronic music,'” she says.
This fusing of folk music and electronic production was the turning point for Sudan. “I started mixing my violin into beats,” she says, “It wasn’t complicated — I’d just sing straight into the iPad.” She honed her at-home style after moving to Los Angeles aged 19 to study music technology, and after a chance encounter at a Low End Theory party with Stones Throw A&R and Leaving Records owner Matthewdavid, she signed with Stones Throw. At the very start of her musical career, she’s already won plaudits from the likes of the New York Times and Pitchfork, and played live at experimental festival Moogfest.
Her EP Sudan Archives is an extraordinary debut statement from a singular artist. Over six tracks, Sudan Archives layers harmonies, violin figures and ethereal vocals, grounding them all with the hip-hop beats.
Born and raised in the small town of Clinton, MS, Shelly Fairchild grew up in a musical family where everyone sang. After receiving her first guitar at the age of six, her aspiration to be a country singer was set. Soon she was singing at school music events, community functions, and state fairs, and competing in talent competitions. At Mississippi College she majored in communications and theater while earning a minor in music. She appeared in local stage productions of Always Patsy Cline, Grease, and Godspell, and was a member of a national touring company for the musical Beehive. In 2001 she moved to Nashville, where she hoped her fiery stage show and powerful, blues-inflected voice (not to mention her rock & roll attitude) would attract some attention. It did. Fairchild signed with Columbia Records Nashville, and her first single, “You Don’t Lie Here Anymore” (written with Sonny LeMaire and Clay Mills), was released late in 2004, with another Fairchild original, “Tiny Town,” supporting it. Her debut full-length, Ride, produced by veteran Buddy Cannon and guitarist Kenny Greenberg, saw release early in 2005 on Columbia.

Khalid heads back to high school in the new clip for “Young Dumb & Broke.” The video includes cameos from several actors famous for high school-related roles, including Dennis Haskins (Saved By The Bell) and Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That).
Khalid’s school experience is joyous and carefree: students scarf pizza, loll in the sun, goof around, play with water pistols, dance in the cafeteria and do no work whatsoever. In between shots of blissful teen life, the camera lingers on a single student for several seconds as a superlative caption like “Class Clown” flashes across the screen. Khalid is declared prom king. (Fun fact: Khalid was voted prom king of his senior class in real life.)
“Young Dumb & Broke” – an organ-heavy ballad sung over a straightforward hip-hop beat – was produced by Joel Little, best known for his work on Lorde’s debut album, Pure Heroine. The track was recently picked as the second single from Khalid’s debut album, American Teen. It climbed to Number 34 on Billboards’ Rhythmic Chart last week.
The clip ends with a dose of comedy from Wayne Brady as an unhappy janitor too old to be singing along to “Young Dumb & Broke.” He’s one of several famous faces in the video: Normani Kordei of Fifth Harmony also makes an appearance, as does the rapper Buddy and the actor/comedian Kel Mitchell.]

Dutch bass producer Sander van Dijck (aka San Holo) blurs the line between EDM genres in the pursuit of creative freedom. Originally, Holo had intended to be in a band, but the constant frustration of relying on others pushed him to explore a more solitary approach. Music production led him to Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. After graduating, Holo worked as a ghost producer, and after some production success, he decided to strike out on his own. Holo began to build a significant following on SoundCloud, through which he launched his Don’t Touch the Classics remix series — featuring remixes of classic ’90s and 2000s hip-hop, such as Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” — substantially increasing his fan base in the process. In 2014 Holo released his debut EP, Cosmos, through Heroic Recordings. Around the same time, the Walt Disney Company was threatening legal action over his stage name, claiming it to be infringement on the popular Star Wars character. Fortunately, Heroic stood by Holo, defending his name as a tribute born out of a love for the franchise; eventually Disney backed off. The following year, Holo partnered with Monstercat for his second EP, Victory. A string of singles followed on various labels, including OWLSA and Spinnin. While the labels Holo chose to work with were all fairly open-minded and forward-thinking, they didn’t provide the level of creative freedom he craved, leading to the formation of his own his own label, Bitbird. His third EP, New Sky, was released on Monstercat in 2016, and he embarked on his first North American tour that year, including stops at Coachella and the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
Maluma is the pseudonym for Juan Luis Londono Arias, a Colombian reggaeton singer known for a sweet tenor voice and streetwise yet romantic delivery. He gained his initial fame as a teenager. He originally pursued football as a vocation, and was gifted enough to attract the notice of the media in his native Medellin. He sang merely for pleasure. Given the rise of the internet, YouTube, and television singing competitions, however, he was swayed toward music. In 2011, at the age of 17, Maluma cut his first single, “Farandulera,” independently. Due to its internet popularity and emergent radio airplay, the song gained the attention of Sony Music. The following year, Maluma released Magia, his debut album. Several of its singles — “Obsesión,” “Loco,” and “Miss Independent” — received consistent airplay and hit the charts in Colombia and Latin America. His next single, “La Temperatura,” entered the North American charts and earned him a Latin Grammy nomination in 2013. Maluma became a star in urban Latin music. In 2014, he was the featured vocalist on Elvis Crespo’s hit “Ole Brazil,” recorded for the World Cup tournament. Maluma returned in early 2015. His first release was PB DB. The Mixtape, a compilation of hits with two new singles, “Me Gustas Tanto” and “Climax.” These tracks charted and set the stage for a brand new album, Pretty Boy Dirty Boy, which appeared in the fall. The recording was produced by Walter Kolm. In 2016, Maluma released a collaborative track with fellow Colombian star Shakira, “Chantage,” and the video became massively popular, racking up over one billion views online within the space of five months. In 2017, Maluma was named “Artist of the Year” at the Premios Lo Nuestro, a Latin music awards show presented by Spanish-language television network Univision. That same year, Maluma announced he was working on his next album, which would feature material in English as well as Spanish.
